So you're in the market for a car; but what type of car should you be looking at? Are you impressed with the massive SUVs such as the Toyota Titan, or are the small, two-seater sports cars more your style? Maybe you've got a family and are looking at a minivan or a station wagon. Here are some of the major types of vehicles and their pros and cons.
Sport Utility Vehicles
Sport utility vehicles, or SUVs are vehicles designed to accomplish a variety of tasks, usually including a transport of a large number of people. SUVs are often equipped with extra rows of seating that can be removed if not being used to provide extra storage space. SUVs are usually the most pricy of vehicles and can up to $100,000 or more, usually starting at around $15,000.
Pros:
- Plenty of room
- Utility in purpose
- Transport extra friends/family
- High sightline when driving
- 4 wheel drive options available
Cons:
- Low gas mileage
- High price
- May suffer from maneuverability issues/tipping
Sedans
Sedans are traditional family vehicles with 4-doors. They offer seating usually for 5 or more persons and can come equipped with the greatest standards in automotive luxury available. In addition, these cars also come equipped with certain features not usually found in other classes of cars and greater levels of safety. Sedans without a lot of features can often be found for as little as $10,000 new.
Pros:
- Comfort
- Great handling
- High safety ratings
- Driving features (DVD players, Sound systems, Navigation systems)
Cons:
- May suffer from lower gas mileage
- Can be pricy depending on features
Compact Cars
Compact vehicles are vehicles designed for simple transport. They may be 2 door or 4 day, but usually they are 2 door, smaller vehicles. They don't usually offer much by way of luxury or additional features but are great for getting around town, for students needing to get to school, or for a simple commute to and from work. Compact vehicles can be found for as little as $6,000 new.
Pros:
- Excellent gas mileage
- Repairs are usually inexpensive
- High levels of handling
- Low price
- Low insurance rates
Cons:
- Small size usually means less protection in an accident
- Lack of space for transporting items and people
